Why Am I Not Receiving A Job Offer?

“I’ve been on several interviews, and I haven’t landed a job yet. What’s going on?”

As much as an accomplishment as it is, and despite the fact we should feel good to be securing interviews, if they don’t lead to an offer, our self-esteem can take a big hit.

There are any number of reasons why you may not receive a job offer. For instance, you may have been an excellent candidate, but the company filled it with an internal candidate and only posted the position because it was a requirement. It’s really not fair to external candidates to go through the process when the outcome has already been decided upon, but from a positive perspective, every interview is an opportunity to get better at it and meet new people. Savvy hiring managers remember good candidates and there may be another opportunity in the future with that company to give it another shot.

It’s also possible that despite being a great candidate for the job, you weren’t able to effectively communicate that fact in your interview. When you need to know exactly what where the disconnect lies, ask a friend or family member who will be 100% candid in their feedback to conduct a mock interview with you. Ask those who aren’t afraid to speak what’s on their minds, and aren’t concerned with hurting your feelings. Sometimes, we all need a bit of bluntness in our lives to help put us on the right track.

You could also take your preparation up a notch and conduct a practice interview complete with a mock interviewer and a video record of the occasion. You can have endless fun reviewing and critiquing your every word and move. There is no better way to get an idea of how you present yourself than to watch yourself in action. If your resume is crafted correctly, it can serve as a great reference point during the interview process. Selectively pulling key points from the resume can help you emphasize your ability to solve issues, cut costs, and increase revenue. Be careful not to recite the resume verbatim – your answers should elaborate on the paperwork the interviewer has already reviewed, not be a verbal commentary of it.

In addition to effectively communicating key points from your resume, it’s important that before each interview you take time to assess your accomplishments. Some of your accomplishments (hopefully) will be found on your resume; uncover additional information by asking yourself some questions such as:

•How did you do a job better than anyone else did? •How have your unique abilities improved a situation or made someone’s life or job easier? •What have you developed, created, or built? •What kinds of awards or recognition has your industry given you? •How have you succeeded because of your willingness to take risks? •List some instances in which you’ve refused to quit despite hardships. •How have you learned from your mistakes? •What are some examples of ways you’ve made a comeback? • What accomplishment best illustrates your ability to facilitate change? •Give an example of how your commitment to your work has motivated you to exceed expectations. •List examples of times when you forced yourself out of your comfort zone and the results of each.

After thoroughly assessing your accomplishments, practice incorporating some of this information into your answers to add that extra something to your interviews. Also, if you don’t have a brag book, or professional portfolio, start one. This could be a helpful tool to incorporate into your next interview to provide proof of your accomplishments.

It can be difficult to move on from a perceived rejection, but don’t live in the past. Once you’ve targeted any possible areas for improvement, stop replaying the interview over and over in your mind. Focus on next steps and new opportunities!
