Four Reasons to Update Your Resume

Many job seekers wait until they have a job listing in front of them before they prepare a resume. However, being ill prepared can result missed opportunities or worse. Here are four reasons to always be equipped with a resume.

  1. Prepare for the Unexpected. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers change jobs for one reason or another almost every 4 years. Even if youíre not approaching that threshold, now is the time to prepare for unexpected opportunities or disasters that may arise. If your company has a layoff, donít let your peers scoop up the best job openings while you stay at home working on your resume.

  2. Donít be modest. Assemble a list of your recent accomplishments to provide to your supervisor at your next performance review. Clearly outlining these achievements helps make a compelling case for why you deserve more than just the standard cost of living increase. As these accumulate in your personnel file, it paints a clear picture of your track record of success during your tenure with the company.

  3. Be First in Line for Promotions. Many companies offer new job openings to existing employees before soliciting outside candidates. Prepare a resume in advance and have a head start on your peers when it comes to applying for coveted jobs or promotions within your own company.

  4. Evaluate your professional growth. Updating your resume, forces you to examine your development as a professional. Use this opportunity to gauge your worth and determine if you are on track to meet your career goals. If you seem to have hit a plateau for the last few years, it may be time to move on.
