Age of the Free Agent

The amount of workers choosing to be Free Agents has steadily risen and number more than 12.4 million. Free Agents choose this work style for the ability to work independently and to better control their job security. While permanent or more traditional jobs give the appearance of having greater stability, in times of recession when job cuts and layoffs are underway this does not prove out.

Workers who have chosen this employment option express higher degrees of work satisfaction. They often make the switch to pursue long-term dreams. They want to feel like they are making a difference in the work force while feeling they're staying true to themselves and their own desires at the same time.

In what sectors is there forecast for highest transition into free agent status? It is reported that workers in every industry are focusing in on quality of life issues. This has been a big factor in driving the large migration to "free agency." People want flexibility in creating their work schedules to accommodate their lifestyles and interests, primarily as it relates to spending more time with family and friends.

To accommodate the changing demands of these workers and the overall employee mix, there are some "new school" recruiting tactics being implemented on behalf of better recruitment and retention. These include situating offices in suburban areas to cut down on the stress of commuting. As another example, personal assistants and concierges are being made available through employers to reduce administrative tasks during work hours.

Casual dress codes and the overall mellowing of work environments have become common. These are great tactics to please and maintain the masses, but more importantly for employers, a higher productivity level is also a great by-product.

The Free Agent can be retained and paid in the same ways as traditional contract/temporary employees. In other words, Free Agents can seek placement through staffing agencies, be directly hired by the employer or represent themselves.
