- The Staff Engineer, Mechanical reports to the Engineering Leader and is responsible for providing a moderate to high level of product design, mentoring to other Engineers and participation in process improvements, strategic planning and presentations. - This position works under a low level of supervision with a high level of independent work. - The Staff Engineer provides awareness and understanding of overall project portfolio, interactions and issues. - This position has a high level of industry/Customer contact and industry awareness. - In addition, this position participates in enterprise negotiation and provides technical evaluation of new opportunities within the PLC process. - Specifically for this position, the successful candidate will interface with customer and vendor development and production engineering staff to develop and maintain an engine fuel delivery system used on an aircraft engine. - The candidate must be able to lead a (10 person) multi-functional team (engineers, designers, technicians, and other support personnel) which is handling development and certification of the engine fuel delivery system. - Candidate must be experienced at handling multiple tasks and prioritization of work. - The Candidate must have excellent technical skills to evaluate system performance data and participate in defect isolation, defect reduction, process re-engineering teams and cost reduction projects. - Plans, schedules and coordinates detailed phases of a major project or in a total project system of moderate scope. May carry out complex or novel research assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. Promotes and implements process improvements company-wide. May write product standard design guidelines. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, but includes a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements, non-standard materials and difficult coordination requirements. Provides direct support of sales and development by sharing information in the form of major/complex proposals and design reviews. Independently troubleshoots/analyzes system problems. Independently writes and performs complex component tests. Dispositions hardware independently. Sets technical direction on complex projects to level 1-3 Engineers. Manage customers, suppliers, and in-house personnel to meet technical specifications, schedules and cost commitments on development projects.
Specifics for this position: - Work with Project Manager on Project Charter (similar to system engineering management plans (SEMP)), Supplier Statement of Works (SOW), system requirement documents (SRD) and traceability matrices for specification requirements to component requirements. - Lead system engineering team which has responsibility for supplier design components and works with multiple internal development engineering teams. - Manage technical aspects of the system: - Retrieval and Negotiation of Overall System Requirements - System Requirements allocation to system elements - System Integration design, performance stack-up, coordination, test and reporting - System Certification (V&V) coordination and documentation - Review customer and supplier engineering changes and hold supplier engineering change approval authority. - Represent Woodward at customer and supplier facilities. - Lead suppliers in improving product quality, processes and reducing lead-time. - Direct and assist in field failure investigations. - Help determine system issue root cause and corrective action. - Coordinate/design system level development test plans and write reports system accomplishment summary reports to customers upon completion. - Lead System Marketing Proposal Efforts from Technical leader/reviewer standpoint. - In some international locations, may perform the following functions: - Responsible for taking verbal and written descriptions from marketing and engineering and creating the physical representation of the product in both solid model and detail drawing form. - Makes decisions regarding dimensioning and tolerancing. - Ensures designs meet manufacturability, testability and reliability criteria. - Specifics for this position - Must be willing to travel. - Travel can be up to 20% of the job. - Some international travel. - Effective written and verbal communication skills including presentations, (Customer, internal and management). - Writes and communicates critical reports. Leads complex design reviews, internally and Customer. - Expert technical writing skills (procedures, reports, etc.) - Competent complex problem solving/troubleshooting skills for both components and subsystems. - Competent in the use of PCs and associated software.
Experience Level: 5+ Years
Requirements: - Solid knowledge of appropriate WISE applications such as BOM, Item Master, NCR, EC screens and part tracking. - Promotes a cross-functional project team environment, communicates with Customers and leads small teams. - May participate in setting technical direction/product strategies. - Provides technical problems-solving guidance to others. - Working knowledge of standards and the ability to apply complex groupings of standards into designs. - Ability to quickly learn, interpret and apply new standards. - Competent use and application of FEA tools; solid use of DFSS tools and methodologies; solid knowledge of Engineering quality systems (PLC, Engineering change, configuration management); solid ability to compute steady state results. - Significant contributor to the design of complex products/systems. - Complete understanding of component functions and testing requirements. - Understands manufacturing processes, drawings and geometric tolerances as well as shop standards. - May direct or lead several Engineers. - Ability to strategically prioritize based on business needs. - May have company-recognized expertise. - May represent Woodward at conferences and industrial events. - Demonstrates leadership skills; ability to drive results across organizational boundaries. - BS degree in Engineering required. - Post-graduate technical degree desired. - Greater than 8 years in related field required, including post-graduate experience. - Knowledge of harnessing and electromechanical sensors such as resolvers, hall-effect devices, LVDT's, RVDT's, variable reluctance (speed) sensors, RDT's, Delta Pressure Switches and Permanent Magnet Alternators, dc motors and solenoids a plus. - Knowledge of pump, filtration, heat exchanger, fuel manifold and nozzles a plus. - Drug Test - Background Check - US Citizenship or Green Card Holder
