Job Description:
Clinical Operations Manager Surgical Services is is responsible for management and quality patient care for patients in the Operating Room and Sterile Processing. Provides operational support and performance input for Clinical Educators. Also participates directly in the hiring, firing and evaluation of all staff assigned to those units. Oversight of the assessment and initial care of over 700+ surgical patients every month. Ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Surgical Service, which includes Operating Room and Sterile Processing on a daily basis. Demonstrates clinical expertise and directs the nursing staff in the execution of the nursing process. Assists in the development and compliance with unit and staff performance standards. Assists the Clinical Director with the preparation and execution of unit budgets. Participates in long range planning. Provides first line direction to all units for which the Director is responsible, in the Directors absence, as designated.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Administers the direct and indirect patient care within Surgery and Sterile Processing. Assists with the development of and compliance to departmental and clinical standards. Ensures the efficient and effective operations of Surgical Services on a daily basis.

* Reviews and revises nursing care standards as demonstrated by documentation.

* Responsible for first line management in the absence of the Director.

* Acts as a professional liaison for the organization with the physicians performing procedures on the surgery schedule, as demonstrated by observation and feedback.

* Maintains clinical skills in the surgical and sterile processing areas.

* All trays stocked correctly sterilized and delivered to OR within set timeframes.

* Ensures that staffing is appropriate to volume of work.

2. Supervises all departmental personnel in the performance of their assigned duties.

* Participates, observes, and documents performance and compliance with established standards in the performance appraisal process.

* Ensures that staffing is appropriate to volume of workload.

* Participates in the selection of staff for departmental positions.

* Supervises the maintenance and documentation of departmental education records and compliance with mandatory inservices.

* Supervises orientation of new employees and/or those developing skills in the clinical areas.

* Collaborates with Director and actively participates in the performance appraisal process.

3. Participates actively in the preparation and maintenance of the annual operational Departmental budget. Provides input for departmental capital equipment considerations.

* Ensures appropriate inventory and routine ordering of departmental supplies appropriate for departmental needs as demonstrated by feedback and audit.

* Participates actively in the annual budgetary process as demonstrated by observation and audit.

* Submits documentation to the Director and evaluation of charges for the capture of maximum reimbursement of expenses incurred.

* Seeks opportunities for increased cost effective measures and supervises staff in maintaining or decreasing costs.

4. Actively participates in all regulatory and licensure processes.

* Monitors the maintenance and condition of equipment and its maintenance in cooperation with Biomedical and Plant Services as demonstrated by documentation and feedback.

* Maintains a thorough working knowledge of current licensure and accreditation standards and requirements.

* Identifies the need for new policies and /or revisions based on regulatory agency requirements or changes in nursing care standards.

5. Demonstrates the leadership skills necessary to establish expectations, develop plans, and manage processes to measure, assess, and improve the quality of the department's management, clinical, and support activities.

* Demonstrates a commitment to the community by supporting and/or providing essential services in a timely manner. Reviews feedback to monitor and evaluate areas to improve performance.

* Oversees development of programs ensuring continuing education of all staff members in order to meet organizational goals and individual position competencies. Opportunities are provided through education and training in collaboration with clinical educator, which enables staff members to reach their individual potential.

* Ensures that all instruments are tracked and managed to eliminate lost item(s).

* Provide ongoing education and training for staff on instrumentation and other educational needs, working with the OR educator.

Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

* Associate Degree in Nursing (A.D.N.), PLUS a Bachelors Degree in a relevant discipline OR current enrollment in Bachelors program. (Bachelors degree/program does not have to be in nursing)

* At least three years clinical operating room experience with two or more years in a management or education role

* Verified Arizona or other compact state RN license

* Current Basic Cardiac Life Support card (BCLS)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (B.S.N.)

* Five or more years of clinical operating room experience, including three or more years in management

* Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR)
