| When applying for engineering positions, make a list of the employer's
qualifying skills. Make another list of all the skills you've obtained through
your training and experience and compare the two. Once done, group
required skills and label them will skill headings that closely match the
employer's requirements.
Armed with this information, the next step is to create your resume. There
are a few standard items that should be on it: brief career
description/objective, employment history with your accomplishments,
skills, memberships & certifications, and education.
Your goals statement should be a short sentence or two noting your years of
experience and the type of position you're looking for. The employment
history is just that, state companies you were with, how long, a short
description of your accomplishments and a bulleted list of the duties you
performed while working there. If you are a member of industry groups or
have specific certifications, these should be listed along with your
education.
Remember, the purpose of your resume is to tell the potential employer why
you would be an asset to their company so put everything you've done in its
best light. Overall, your resume should be easy to read and scan and you
should make it easy for employers to get in touch with you.
