Should Candidates Fill Out Applications?

Do you have your full-time candidates fill out some sort of employment application as part of the process of working with your firm?

The problem with this is that you may not get it filled out if the candidate is on the fence. Remember that the candidate who is pursued is usually deemed a higher quality candidate than the one who is looking. If they are looking, they will fill it out; but if not, they will think it is beneath them and you might lose out on someone who would later think your client is amazing after that first interview.

So it really depends on the level which you recruit, and also the people you recruit; it depends on their openness to leaving.

Having said that, if you have a candidate who is ready to go forward, say for example you recruit them over the phone and they are ready to leave their company, it may be a good idea to give them a document such as this to fill out along with a resume.

Something which may be even more useful though, is to have them get you a “sizzle sheet.” Here's an example: I recruited a candidate a few weeks ago who perfectly fit my client's need. He was extremely interested in the client's opportunity but was not actively looking. He clearly saw my client's potential and was eager to get me his resume. I also had him get me his "three greatest reasons." I phrased it this way. "Dan, let's say I present you to my client and they are on the fence about bringing you in for an interview. I want you to think of the three greatest reasons why they should consider you. I want you to email those with your resume, and next to each one, I want you to be as specific as possible and see if you can even quantify each reason. Instead of saying you are a great leader, tell me how many people in your department have been promoted and that you have 100 percent retention."

That way, they are investing time and energy in the process, which further commits them to the process. Plus, you are getting more information that may not be on the resume that you can use to sway the client to meeting them. Plus, you are letting them know that you are assuming a position of authority and leadership with them in how they interact with you, which diminishes the likelihood of them disrespecting you or ignoring you further on down the process.
